"Building Earth" depicts the fact that bubbles created by volcanic activity below the sea carried to the surface carbon dioxide and other chemical elements trapped within. Once there, they would burst releasing the carbon dioxide and other elements.  Over millions of years the bubbles' release of carbon dioxide and other gases built Earth's atomosphere and also gave life on it.

Behind the blue of the water are figures of humans in the act of working and building.  But before humans could build on Earth, bubbles had to build the atmosphere.

The sky is black because,  "With no atmosphere, the background sky would be black for all the light from the sun and other sources would follow straight paths to the eye."  With atmosphere light bounces around the atomosphere before it reaches the eye giving the color that is seen.
